DEEP CLEANING YOUR MAKEUP BRUSHES

Sunday, March 05, 2017

Well, as mundane as washing your makeup brushes is, it's gotta be done - unless you just adore the feel of dirty brushes sweeping across your face! The amount of dirty brushes I see other people use is absolutely repulsive, and I wish they could find the time to wash them and see what harm they're actually doing.
Let me tell you why it's imperative to clean your brushes regularly...
  • Your brushes are actually trapping bacteria as they're sat there in your brush pot on your vanity.
  • Not every speck of bacteria is from your brushes idly sat there, but every time you use your brush and swipe it across your face, it collates germs from your face and these germs are deposited into the fibres of your brush which are then left to fester inside for however long.
  • You will use this brush again and the viscous cycle will continue, and then you'll wonder why your skin suddenly purging out with these spots.
So you may ask, how often must you wash your brushes? So, it all depends on how often you use your brushes. If you use make up on a daily basis (even if it's the tiniest amount) you must wash your FACE brushes once a week. This is because it's more likely for the festering bacteria to cause spots as  these kinds of brushes reach the majority of your facial surface area. Also, foundations and powders etc have a more creamy and stickier consistency so it'll hold onto more bacteria for longer. However eye brushes obviously won't cause spots and acne around the eyelid area, so therefore less of a problem. However you still must wash these brushes as they still catch bacteria at the end of the day - I recommend washing eye brushes at least once a fortnight, again depending on how often you use them. But Beautyblenders are a whole different story. The amount of foundation, powder and concealer those babies hold onto is repulsive. I am adamant on washing them every single day - as you can tell, I'm not a fan of swiping bacteria all over my face xxx
So how do I clean them?

  1. Grab your dirty brush and run it under lukewarm water, not too hot else it'll damage the fibres and not too cold else the dirt wouldn't come off easily.
  2. Pump some soap (maybe shampoo, but I use dove hand soap as it's an antibacterial and it leaves my brushes very soft!)
  3. Swirl the wet brush around your palm, the crevices in your palm and between your fingers will allow your brush to create friction - removing the grime.
  4. Rinse in lukewarm water again, and squeeze the excess water out. Shape the brush so bristles aren't damaged when they dry.

I like to use soap rather than some type of 'brush washing solution' as it's cheaper, and I don't find a special solution necessary really when the soap does the job just as well. I'd rather save a couple pounds, and the Dove hand soap is around £1 as it is!

SPOTS? We all despise their existence. But how do we prevent them? Well as I have made clear in the previous paragraph, you must wash your brushes and blenders! Also, ever noticed spots around your cheek and chin area? These may be hormonal, but chances are they may be due to all the dirt stuck to your phone. Ensure you wipe your phone with an antibacterial wipe regularly to get rid of those germs and change your pillowcases every week too! You probably have heard this TOO many times, but drinking your daily dosage of water can make an improvement to your skin in the short term. It flushes the toxins out of your system and keeps your skin healthy and radiant. Finally, make sure your moisturise your skin! You may think not moisturising will dry your skin out and hence your spots, but it'll do the opposite quite frankly. Not moisturising will cause your skin to release it's own oils, therefore making your skin release twice as much oil than normal. This creates the perfect environment for more spots to appear, so it is imperative to moisturise your skin. Try to use non-comedogenic creams as they won't block your pores, or water based creams. A little trick is to use olive oil as a moisturiser before you go to bed! It'll replenish your skin overnight, without leaving a residue.

I hope these tips and tricks help you!
